The Exam Pen has been approved by The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ)* for use in exams. It is continuing to be a key tool in assisting students with reading difficulties to take exams, allowing them to read and understand the questions.
It contains many features which are specifically designed to enhance students’ reading experience. To allow students to read with more fluency and little disruption, the Exam Reader Pen instantly displays scanned words on the screen and says the word or line of text aloud. The device is used with headphones to provide students with discreet audio, whilst not disturbing others, especially during exams.
The Exam Reader Pen does not require another person to set up and can be ready to use as soon as an exam begins. It is also battery operated so unlike a computer reader there are no cables running across the exam hall.
It is also small, making it easy to store in a secure place and transport between classrooms and exam halls. The reading tool is brightly coloured in orange and clearly states “ExamPen” on the screen to make it obvious to invigilators that it is an approved device, keeping delays to the beginning of exams to a minimum.
The Exam Pen, most importantly, provides students with a huge confidence boost ahead of their exams and ensures that reading difficulties such as dyslexia do not put them at a disadvantage in terms of their school performance.
“The arrangement ‘Read Aloud’ would also include the use of an examination reading pen. A permitted examination reading pen will not have an in-built dictionary or thesaurus, or a data storage facility. An approved application for a computer reader would also allow the use of an examination reading pen.”
